What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad (SO) is a nationally organized science competition which exists to augment the science curriculum in our schools. With coach guidance, students work together using hands-on activities to explore multiple science disciplines.
There are 23 different events. BMMS students typically select between 2 and 4 events to study over the course of 4 months (see BMMS regional competition eligibility requirements coming soon)
All BMMS SO students are invited to compete at our very own BMMS Science Olympiad Competition Day scheduled Dec 10, 2011. Results from this competition will be used to help identify students prepared to represent BMMS at the Regional SO Competition scheduled at RBHS on February 4, 2012.
BMMS has been participating in the San Diego Regional SO Competitions since 1997. Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteer coaches and students, BMMS has a history of regional success and state recognition.
We are evolving!
Due to its popularity, year after year BMMS SO student enrollment has continued to increase. In 2008 BMMS program enrollment surpassed the regional competition limit of 90 students, and almost 30 students were unable to compete at the regional competition. In 2009 over 40 students were unable to compete. In 2010, with 140 students, we had 50 prepared alternates unable to compete at regional.
Rather than refuse students who are interested in science, we welcome all to join and learn. In early December we hold an on site school competition for everyone who joins - BMMS SO Day.
This event will aid in the regional team selection process and offers the same opportunity for success to all participants in the program.
Volunteers are needed to help plan and organize this event. Please contact us if you are interested.
